Abdullah Ibrahim, formerly known as Dollar Brand, was a South African jazz pioneer when he joined Hugh Masekela in the Jazz Epistles in the early 1960s. He soon left to travel in Europe and the U.S. where he got encouragement from mentor Duke Ellington. Ibrahim now lives in New York and occasionally travels to South Africa to perform.
